All participants can audit all parts of the workshop and listen to the concerts. The level indication is an indication of teaching level. Intermediate-advanced means that the instruction will be based on the assumption that the participants are acquainted with basic and most of the more advanced techniques.
For beginner level, the assumption is that the participants can make a stable sound in at least the two basic registers, and are acquainted with basic techniques.
Total beginners will have a total of 3 hours of instruction on Friday. Instruments will be available to borrow for the whole workshop. Instruction will be in French (or English if required).
Registration is mandatory by email to registration@chikumeisha.net
You will then receive detailed information about the workshop and payment.
When payment is complete, you will receive a link to download the material studied during the workshop.
This price does not include accomodation.
Pieces taught at the workshop
Honkyoku (kinko-ryū fundamental pieces)
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Kyūshū Reibo” 3 hour Workshop
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Ginryū Kokū” renkan 3 hour Master Class
- Beginners: “Akebono Sugagaki” (short version) 3 hour Workshop
“Kyūshū Reibo” is an almost 25-minute long honkyoku. We go through special features, and finally play the whole piece together.
“Ginryū Kokū” (renkan) is a 15-minute honkyoku duet. We go through special features, and finally play the whole piece together.
“Akebono Sugagaki” is in full some 18 minutes, but it consists of two almost identical parts of approximately 9 minutes each. The second half of the piece is also the fundament for the duet (renkan) version of this piece, and it will be this second half of the piece that will be taught during the workshop.
Practice on renkan pieces (duets) for the Saturday concert:
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Akebono Sugagaki” renkan
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Akita Sugagaki” renkan
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Kumoi-jishi” renkan
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Sagari-ha no Kyoku” renkan
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Sanya Sugagaki” renkan
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Taki-otoshi” renkan
Other pieces are also possible.
Gaikyoku (repertoire of sankyoku ensemble pieces, with strings and vocals)
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Shin Musume Dōjōji” 4 hour Workshop
- Intermediate-Advanced: “Hira” 3 hour Workshop
- Beginners: “Shin Takasago” 3 hour Workshop
“Shin Musume Dōjōji” is a jiuta sōkyoku piece on lower intermediate level. We go through basic techniques, and finally play the whole piece together.
“Hira” is a piece composed by Miyagi Michio in 1923. It is not in the basic curriculum of Chikumeisha, but still a representative piece of the so-called New Japanese Music (shin nihon ongaku) of the 20th century. We go through basic techniques, and finally play the whole piece together.
“Shin Takasago” is a short sōkyoku (piece for koto) of the first level of playing. We go through basic techniques, and finally play the whole piece together.
Different levels
Beginner level Friday + 2 hours on Saturday
Friday
Beginners will work on the honkyoku piece “Akebono Sugagaki” for two hours and on the gaikyoku piece “Shin Takasago” for two additional hours.
Saturday and Sunday
* Beginners have one hour each on “Shin Takasago” and “Akebono Sugagaki”, and should also try to audit the other parts of the workshop.
- The renkan session of “Ginryū Kokū” will be technically more difficult, but beginners are welcome to audit.
- Technically speaking, neither “Shin Musume Dōjōji” or “Hira” are that difficult (lower intermediate level), so it should be possible for beginners to join, and at least partly follow, these gaikyoku sessions. Please note, though, that the tempo in teaching will be aligned more towards the intermediate-advanced participants.
Total beginners Friday 3, up to 3 hours
Even total beginners are welcome for separate instruction on Friday. Instruments will be available to borrow for the workshop. Instruction in French, or English if required.
Total beginners are also welcome to audit other parts of the workshop.
