Pieces taught at this workshop Pieces
Honkyoku (kinko-ryū fundamental pieces)
- Intermediate/advanced: Taki-otoshi no Kyoku renkan (6 hours)
Taki-otoshi no Kyoku is one of the thirty-six Kinko-ryū honkyoku, and a fascinating renkan duet. It is not an easy renkan duet, and requires participants to have basic understanding of the solo version (material included).
Gaikyoku (repertoire of sankyoku ensemble pieces, with strings and vocals)
- Intermediate/advanced: Mama no Kawa (2 hours)
- Advanced: Miyama-jishi (4 hours)
Both Miyama-jishi and Mama no Kawa were composed for shamisen by Kikuoka Kengyō (1792–1847). The koto part for Miyama was added by Yaezaki Kengyō (1776–1848), and for Mama by Matsuno Kengyō (fl. In the 1830s). Lyrics for Miyama by Takenaka Sumiko and for Mama by Miyakoshi Yumechō.
Gendaikyoku (repertoire of contemporary pieces)
- Intermediate/advanced: Kaze no Uta (2 hours)
Kaze no Uta was composed in 1970, by Sawai Tadao (1937–1997) for koto and shakuhachi. Sawai is one of the most important twentieth-century composers of contemporary music for Japanese instruments. He was working with his wife Kazue and his son Hikaru, who are both still active. Sawai Tadao was trained in the classical repertoire but continued to add to the contemporary repertoire.
